Call your North Carolina State Senator – particularly DAN BISHOP (919-733-5655) – and ask him or her to support SB564 to RAISE THE AGE at which teenagers can be tried as adults. Other Raise The Age bills under consideration – SB549 and SB146 — are watered-down versions. Tell your Senator you want the Legislature to pass SB564.
Talking Points:- SB564 has support across the political divide – both the John Locke Foundation and the ACLU support it.
- North Carolina is the only state left that prosecutes 16- and 17-year-olds as adults. It is no longer consider best-practice.
- Fifteen years of data show that the juvenile court system has better outcomes for rehabilitation than the adult court system, which has high rates of recidivism. This makes us all safer.
- Data from Connecticut and Illinois demonstrate that Raising The Age will save money in the long run.
- Keep calling your US Senators and insist that NO TAX REDUCTIONS for high income brackets should be tacked onto any health care bill.

North Carolina — perhaps more than any other state in the Union — has been transformed by the growing tidal wave of political spending. Zach Galifianakis, comic star of “The Hangover” movies, returns to his home state to investigate North Carolina’s status as a bellwether for how a few people can use their money to influence our democratic form of government. Galifianakis investigates allegations that the current state government was put in power by moneyed interests and has thus carried out a program that only benefits its backers: cuts to education, healthcare spending and environmental protection; lowering of taxes for the wealthy and corporations; and the passage of laws designed to roll back access to the ballot.
