The Charlotte Women’s Movement, along with Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, the ACLU of North Carolina, the Reproductive Rights Coalition, the Charlotte Reproductive Action Network, Healthcare Justice of NC, and other progressive organizations will be holding the “Fighting for Our Reproductive Rights” rally on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 11:00 am in First Ward Park.

“We want the lawmakers in Washington and Raleigh to hear our voices and know that we do not want North Carolina to be the next Texas,” said Gina Navarrete, Charlotte Women’s Movement Co-President. “Draconian abortion laws will lead women to unsafe abortion practices that will disproportionately hurt those from financially poor communities, particularly BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and people in rural areas. Abortion is healthcare, and placing more restrictions is a public healthcare crisis. We will stand together on October 2nd to demand that abortion be safe, legal and accessible!”
The October 2nd rally is part of a larger network of protests occurring all across the country. Organizers expect hundreds of thousands of people to join together on that day to make their voices heard that abortion should be legal and accessible, and reproductive rights need to remain a woman’s right.
The rallies are occurring in response to the recent Texas law that makes abortion illegal after six weeks of pregnancy and allows for citizen vigilantes to enforce this law. Other states have been rushing to copy the Texas law.
“By no means do we want legislators in Raleigh to pass a similar law here in North Carolina,” said Brooke Adams, President of the Reproductive Rights Coalition. “Our State already has excessive government interference with reproductive healthcare decisions, including waiting periods, biased counseling requirements and a ban on telemedicine for abortion care. We need more freedom to control our bodily autonomy and future, not less.”
The Charlotte Women’s Movement seeks to raise awareness and galvanize action on equality for all women with a focus on the local community. Since 2017, the Charlotte Women’s Movement has organized rallies and marches of over 10,000 people interested in having their voices heard.
Charlotte American Association of University Woman members support and will attend.
