Charlotte has one of the lowest asylum grant rates in the nation. Stories from the Court Observers are showing that the presence of citizen observers is fostering due process, fairness and consistency in the courtrooms and holding judges to a higher standard. You do not speak, you just sit and observe, and it makes the difference.
If you can give one morning or afternoon a month to this project, more immigrant lives have the potential to be positively impacted. Please consider joining us!
• Receive hands-on training about immigration court proceedings.
• Experience our justice system in action.
• Gain perspective on the needs of our local immigrant communities.
• Help immigrants in Charlotte and from around the state have a more consistent court experience.
Observers provide much-needed community oversight in cases involving unrepresented respondents, particularly for minors and non-English speakers. Please join us in making a difference in the lives of immigrants facing deportation.
The next Advocates for Immigrant Rights (AIR) Court Observer Project Training will be held on Saturday, August 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This training will be for new volunteers who want to become observer in Charlotte’s Immigration Court.
If you have any questions about the training do not hesitate to email us or visit our website.
