Legislative Update and Call to Action

A Message from Democratic Women of North Carolina (DWNC) and Planned Parenthood South Atlantic (PPSA)

Greetings,

The NC Senate Judiciary Committee passed the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act on Friday afternoon, and the full Senate will vote on this bill Monday afternoon. The House bill will be voted on in Rules Committee next, and likely the full House will vote in days. It is part of a coordinated national effort to attack Roe v. Wade and fast track the abortion conversation to the Supreme Court.

According to Planned Parenthood, “Politicians in Raleigh are trying to restrict access to safe and legal abortion yet again. They’ve introduced SB 359 and HB 602, extreme anti-women’s health bills written by politicians, not doctors. These bills have no basis in medical science and are designed to shame patients and criminalize doctors for a medical practice that doesn’t even exist.”

According to DWNC, the path to overturning Roe is two-fold. One, Republicans are seeking to ban abortion at every stage. Two, they are working to criminalize the doctors who provide this life saving care.

What we know as women is that every woman’s life, every woman’s family and every woman’s pregnancy is unique. Women, with their doctors, are best suited to make these decisions. There is no need for our legislators to insert themselves into our healthcare decisions. (Note State Senator Dan Bishop was a co-sponsor of this legislation)

We encourage you to contact your state Senator and Representative by phone prior to Noon on Monday and ask them to vote NO on SB359 and HB 602. Local Representative and Senate contacts can be found here.

We encourage you to forward this message to your allies. Please help us protect the rights of women’s health.
