The League of Women Voters Charlotte Mecklenburg
presents
Civics 101
beginning February 25, 2019
Civics 101 is a 5-week, one-evening-per-week program led by current and former government officials in a face-to-face format. This program is especially useful to the citizens of Charlotte-Mecklenburg County, to people living in the Charlotte Metropolitan area, and to persons wanting to learn more about how local government works. If you have a desire to become a more informed citizen, have an interest in learning how local government works, seek info identifying what government departments can help you when you need assistance in the Metro-Charlotte area, and/or wish to direct your energy in order to inspire change, JOIN US! Registration is now open.
Each class is taught by a veteran of local government. Former Mayor Richard Vinroot, for example, will lead the class on city government. Former Commissioner Karen Bentley will talk about the county. Chief District Judge Regan Miller is among those who will tackle the courts.
Since its debut in January 1997, hundreds of people have taken the course. Some, including former Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts and state Sen. Joyce Waddell, have gone on to public office. – Jim Morrill, Charlotte Observer (full article link here)
Registration for the program is open to the public. The Civics 101 program is in its 24th year of providing five interactive sessions to learn about local government. “We are aggressively promoting it because we believe that increased participation in local government when backed with knowledge can greatly improve our local community,” states Tom Murdock, 1st VP, Director, Civics 101 LWVCM.
In the event of inclement weather, we will follow the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools policy regarding cancelling classes.
Each session takes place from 6:15 – 8:30pm as follows:
