Passage of AHCA by House hurts the old, sick, and poor
It is very distressing that the House of Representatives voted 217-213 to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA) with a bill that is worse than the bill that failed in March. Cuts in Medicaid will result in much higher costs for the poor, disabled and elderly, or no insurance, while providing a huge tax break to individuals making more than $200,000.
The bill would permit discrimination against people with pre-existing health conditions, substantially increase insurance premiums for older adults, result in millions of people losing coverage, and worsen the fiscal health of Medicare. Planned Parenthood patients are targeted and women stand to lose access to birth control, cancer screenings, STI treatment and other care at Planned Parenthood health centers. The bill will cut Medicaid funding, which millions of low-income seniors as well as children and adults with disabilities rely on, by more than $800 billion over 10 years. The AHCA has been condemned by leading consumer and health groups, including AARP and physician and hospital organizations. Note that the bill has NOT been scored by the Congressional Budget Office so we do not know the actual cost/loss of insurance for our citizens.
TAKE ACTION: This bill is now going to the Senate. We need the OMB score. Please contact your senator to oppose this legislation.
