Congratulations all on your help saving Obamacare. Many voices made a difference although we need to remain vigilant. The fight is not over yet.
Welcome to the Women’s March on Charlotte, the group that staged the Charlotte march that attracted 25- 30,000 people, according to CMPD. We are discussing merging the two groups so that we both can be more effective. We hope to see many of you at our April 18 meeting.
We have been active the last several weeks. Jan Anderson was on a panel at the Levine Museum of the New South about Women in Social Change. Beth Davis, Karen Knoble and Emily Stephenson-Green came along to support her. Heloise Merrill and Marsha Ford organized voter registration during the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Kathryn Mahan and Ann Hooper attended a coalition meeting of 100 activist groups in our area. The following Charlotte Women’s March committees met: Women’s Health, Environment and Voter Registration/ Candidate Support.

March For Science – Charlotte
We are excited to support the March For Science on Earth Day, April 22. It is in Marshall Park uptown 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
Our voter registration and legislation groups will have a booth, so plan to meet there before the march and we will march together. You will recognize the booth by the great signs Heloise Merrill had made.
We have a wonderful banner 10 feet long, thanks to Ju’Ian Shen, that we will march behind. We are hoping our large group will make an impact. To make sure we are recognizable, we are selling green t-shirts with the Charlotte Women’s March logo for $10. We need a volunteers to coordinate the t-shirt sales. If you want to help, please contact Jan Anderson.
We are working with the event coordinators to provide volunteers, speakers and funding. If you are willing to volunteer, please contact Tina Maguylo or call 704/785-5528.
For speakers, we are asking for women who studied and/or have careers in the STEM subjects to speak briefly about what role Science/Math/Technology has in their lives. We would like 6-12 people to come forward, state name, education, work experience and why STEM matters. Contact Karen Knoble to participate.
The organizers need to raise $4,500 to cover expenses. Representatives are attending our meeting April 18, so bring your checkbook and make a donation. Or visit their web site and donate.

Spring Into Action with Lillian’s List. Come together to focus our energy on recruiting and training candidates to run in 2018 and even 2020. ACLU of Charlotte – Immigrant Rights Team Meeting.The team is currently working on creating a transportation support team for immigrants through A Tu Lado/By Your Side, a resource directory for new immigrants, a response team in case another travel ban is implemented and ways to engage the public. 6:00-7:30 p.m. • Park Road Baptist Church, 3900 Park Rd.
Other Actions
- Call your senators to oppose the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Gorsuch. He is not supportive of women’s health issues and the right to choose.
- Call Senator Burr and your representative to support an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate Russian interference into our elections. The House Intelligence Committee demonstrated last week that they will not be able to work in a bipartisan way as has been the long-standing tradition. What is needed is a 9/11-style independent to look into the role Russia played and whether there were any connections to the Trump campaign.
- Call your representative to oppose such devastating budget cuts to the EPA.
- Call your representative to express your support for funding of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the National Endowment for Humanities (NEH) and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB)
- Call or write Richard Burr and ask him to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Russian involvement in the elections and with the Trump campaign.
- Call or write your state legislator concerning HB 62. It is another attempt at legislating women’s health and it is not even a medically tested procedure. Contact Speaker Tim Moore and Senate Leader Phil Berger.
